Merian Plate No.1 Lilium Aureum glad cloth or other nonwoven fabricDuring Maria Sibylla Merian's lifetime (1647 1717), she studied, illustrated and published a number of works on the process of metamorphosis. The life and almost magic transformational process from catepillar to butterfly kept her documenting and travelling as far as South America, which was an exceptional feat for a woman at this time.
